Department of Mechanical, Energy and Biotechnology Engineering | VDU Žemės ūkio akademija

Department of Mechanical, Energy and Biotechnology Engineering

The department was founded in 2021 by merging two institutes: Energy and Biotechnology Engineering with Power and Transport Machinery Engineering.

The Institute of Energy and Biotechnology Engineering was established in 2012 by merging the Departments of Agroenergy and Heat and Biotechnology Engineering. The Institute continued the scientific and pedagogical work, good work and traditions of these departments. The origins of the institute date back to 1949, when the Department of Thermal Engineering and Agricultural Electrification was established at the Faculty of Agricultural Mechanization of the Lithuanian Academy of Agriculture, which began to organize systematic studies in energy subjects at the faculty. At that time, the activities of the department were very active, as the need for qualified graduates increased, so in 1967, two independent departments were formed: Agricultural Electrification and Livestock Mechanization and Thermal Engineering. The active scientific activity of the departments and the growing need for qualified graduates of the faculty determined the further development of the departments. These departments expanded and a new Department of Electrical Machinery was established (1975), which later became the Department of Agricultural Automation (1990), the latter being merged again in 1994 with the Department of Electrical Machinery and renamed the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation. Two years later (1996) it was merged with the Department of Agroenergy. Significant changes took place in the faculty in 1994, when the Department of Livestock Mechanization and Thermal Engineering was reorganized into the Department of Agricultural Product Storage and Processing Engineering. Part of the researchers from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Test Station and the Food Institute (KTU) transferred to the established department. The department was assigned to oversee the Engineering Program in Agricultural Product Storage and Processing Technology.

The Institute of Power and Transport Machinery Engineering was established in 2012 when the Department of Mechanics was attached to the Department of Transport and Power Machinery. The origins of the institute are linked to the Department of Tractors and Cars, founded in 1947. The Institute cooperates with the Latvia Universities of Agriculture, Riga Technology University, Tallinn Technology University, Tartu University, Gdynia Naval Academy, Warmia-Mazury University in Olsztyn, Szczecin Maritime University, Hamburg-Harburg Technical University, Tbilisi R. Dvali Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Georgia Technical University, Institute of Applied Physics in Moldova, Institute of Metal Polymer Systems in Belarus, Georgia University of Technology, Moscow State Technical University, Kaunas University of Technology, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Klaipeda University and other domestic and foreign universities. The Institute of Power and Transport Machinery Engineering has the Laboratory of Automatic Control of Machinery, Technological Systems and Processes, the Laboratories of Tribology, Materials Science, Mechatronics, VDV Research, Machine Service Science and Studies.
